Task two, Learning objective 3 and 4. Analysis of editing and shot composition. TARZAN.

The scene that I chose to write about is from the film TARZAN ( 1999 ), I chose this scene because it's my most favourite scene from the film and it is fantastic in its shot placement for reactions, and emotions expressed throughout the scene.
I thought that writing about this scene would be rather easy, but then looking at just how many shots there were from the point where Jane ( Lady in yellow dress ) gets in danger, till the point where she is safe.
There are approximately 72 shots, I'm not too sure of the exact number because I accidentally made duplicate images while taking screen shots of the cuts.

___________________________________________________________________________________

This image is quite expressive that the baboons are very angry at Jane because of the way they are positioned with the tufts of hair on their backs being raised, and the way they are high-up, looking down with their teeth bearing, looks like they are trying to intimidate her.

_________________________________________________________________________________

Clearly in this picture you can tell the intimidation is working as this is an image of Jane being very startled.
As you can see too, she is down in the floor, looking up at the baboons.

_________________________________________________________________________________

The baboons almost look rabid the way they are bearing their teeth when they pounce..
There is always that intimidating pause before animals just pounce without notice.

___________________________________________________________________________________

In this image it shows that she is very scared because of her facial expressions,  and that she is clearly not familiar with the environment as she is just tripping up and is all over the place.

___________________________________________________________________________________

Before this scene Tarzan was following Jane and showing curiosity towards her, but then shows even more when she's in danger and like a quick thinker, instantly jumps to help her.

___________________________________________________________________________________

This shot looks like Tarzan's point of view to what is going on, and it looks like it is only fair that he should help her as the image clearly shows that she is out numbered by far, I think that this shot's purpose is to show the real extent of the danger as the first shot only looked like around 20 baboons ( Not saying 20 isn't deemed out numbered either, because it most definitely is!! )

___________________________________________________________________________________

Here Tarzan looks like he's made his mind up and is going to help, the previous shot of him just looked like her was merely getting a closer look, but by the look on his face, he looks quite angry (possibly at the baboons, or at Jane for getting herself in danger over a silly mistake).

___________________________________________________________________________________

I think the purpose of this shot is suppose to show Tarzan's strength and speed as he is faster than the baboons, this is the first scene where you really get to see him action, as previously, he was left out by his friends because he "could never keep up". Then he began to prove his worth.

___________________________________________________________________________________

I like this shot, I like the perspective of people running head on, because when the danger gets closer, it gets bigger and that is rather scary, I think the aim of this shot is to show the fear, she's moving quite slow compared to them, but she's also the main focus of the screen and the thing you can see first when watching this, is her face.

___________________________________________________________________________________

This is a shot of what looks like a huge crack in the earth or some sort of crevice that never ends, the shot zooms in very quick with some sort of bounce to it, this is typically done as a point of view shot to something the person spots that is scary or dangerous, in this case, it's very dangerous as it's pretty much a dead end... or die falling, or die being mauled in this case.

___________________________________________________________________________________

This is another shot of her running, and she looks even more scared, and the baboons are much more closer to her now, I suspect that she looks even more scared now though, because of the cliff that may or may not stop her.

___________________________________________________________________________________

In this shot it shows that she is just seconds from being caught by the creatures, It also looks like she's running too fast to make a decision on whether she is to jump or not, so it's obvious that she's just going to do it anyway. When your pumping with adrenaline, you make either ballsy or stupid decisions. But I suppose an imminent quick and painless splat is better than the slow and painful mauling.

___________________________________________________________________________________

Here it looks like her leap of faith paid off and that she'd braced herself for the worst as her eyes are squinted shut.....   Lucky the big buff monkey man was there though.. That would have been quite messy.

___________________________________________________________________________________

This is a shot from near where she is hanging of the crack she would have fallen down, the crack appears to be no problem for the baboons, so even if she did make it or not, the worst would have happened.. I assume that this shot is after her opening her eyes slightly to peak.

___________________________________________________________________________________

In this shot she is clearly confused and I recall that she says something along the lines of "whuu? I'm flyin- Whuuuu!" I can imagine it is a very confusing thing to happen, when you prepare yourself for the worst and then you're mysteriously floating in the air.

___________________________________________________________________________________

This shot is rather scary looking, from this angle it does look rather like he's just kidnapping her or something so her scream after seeing him is quite understandable, but it is also quite a startling angle too, his hand is like the size of his torso in this image, so seeing some man suspending you super high up with his meaty large gorilla hands is rather daunting.

___________________________________________________________________________________

Here she is rather startled, and you know this is her being scared, as we've just seen like ten of her scared faces.

___________________________________________________________________________________

This shot shows that the baboons are just savage towards her, teeth bearing, their trying to tear her shoes of, dribbling all over the place...  These fellas are not going away anytime soon.

___________________________________________________________________________________

In this shot she is trying to bat it off with her umbrella, which she seems to have an amazing grip as that thing is STILL in her hand, whether it's for the fear of losing her foot, or for the fear of losing her boot, I'm not sure, because all of this is over some personal belongings to start with, and she seems the type of person to care too much for personal belongings.

___________________________________________________________________________________

In this shot, it just shows the anger of the baboons so very much... They are just livid, falling to possibly die upon landing... and it just really wants to rip the crap out of that shoe, either that, or the animal is so primitive it's not even realised it's falling just yet.. .... Aaand the penny drops.

___________________________________________________________________________________

As you see in this image she is some what distorted and Tarzan is in the back ground, still dragging her. The way that her hair is pointing upwards and the way her arms are suspended in the air shows that she is falling downwards possibly and that is more than likely the reason for the expression on her face.. It seems the priority for Tarzan is getting her out of danger, rather than caring about how he actually does so as he's just carrying her like she's dead weight, the way she is flailing around like a rag doll.

___________________________________________________________________________________

I like this image, it shows Tarzan's skills as he practically defies gravity, he must have taken quite strong leap to still be holding her AND propel both of them in the air like that.

___________________________________________________________________________________

In this image it I just see a woman who is far too scared to move after the experience she just had, but in this case it was just a tiny calm before the storm. I also like the placement of her toes, the big toe is rigid and the smaller toes are are curled up... Which is usually a reaction to things like pain, pleasure or being started. Though, I highly doubt she is getting any pleasure in being chased by savage baboons.

___________________________________________________________________________________

Which is more than what I can say for the baby baboon who seems to be really enjoying the fact that his/her family are trying to tear Jane to shreds! The baboons look almost like they did in the first scene, like they are trying to catch Jane and Tarzan off guard by moving slowly before they suddenly pounce!

___________________________________________________________________________________

Jane told Tarzan to let her go and acted offended after her help, but after the baboons are back again, she leaps straight into his arms instantly, I  think she's not all that ungrateful of his help. He is a strong figure and she is already relying on his skills. This was quite a long shot, and continues to him sliding on the branches.

___________________________________________________________________________________

This tunnel like image looks rather scary, and it also looks rather hard to get through. Just the sharpness of it too makes it look somewhat painful to attempt.

___________________________________________________________________________________

Tarzan looks very unsure of himself in this shot, mainly from the expression on his face, Jane too, doesn't look too sure either.
